Abstract

With particular focus on emerging Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technologies, several new ways for safer and more efficient road transport have been elaborated over the years. One of these is Virtual Traffic Light (VTL) which elects leaders to act as virtual infrastructure that manages traffic flow and controls traffic lights without relying on physical devices. The goal for this thesis was to enhance our VTL implementation to no longer rely on such physical road side devices and to support arbitrary intersection layouts. Supplementary, the overall traffic flow efficiency has also been increased by simultaneously switching multiple lights to green for non-conflicting lanes. I investigated my proposal in synthetic and realistic scenarios in regard to performance and safety. Most alarming outcome is the fact that VTLs are likely to lead to accidents if communication is obstructed or faulty and vehicles therefore are prevented from exchanging vital messages. Nevertheless, in most cases where communications was possible VTL effectively increases traffic flow and improves overall driving experiences in comparison to physical traffic lights using low to medium loaded networks.
