Abstract

Network security has become a major part of the network infrastructure especially in the area of detection mechanisms for attacks and intrusions. Today's communication networks are threatened by an increasing number of intrusion attempts, worms and computer viruses. Apart from general measures for attack detection and prevention, the performance of the monitoring architecture employed by the attack detection constitutes an important asset for network security. In this thesis, the focus was on the amount of measurement data obtained by different monitoring probes that has to be transmitted and analyzed by an attack detection system in a distributed network security environment. The question was to achieve self-organizing behaviour at the monitoring part and should be able to adapt the resources of the analyzer. In order to cope with these goals, a framework is provided for the systematic analysis of the overall security environment by means of simulation environment OMNet++. Different approaches were proposed in the distributed network environment in order to prevent the overhead at the analyzing system. In the simulations, the increase in the speed up gained by considering different distributed solutions and by adapting different parameters is being observed. Finally, a more detailed analysis and interpretation was made for the development of early warning systems and mechanisms for the prevention of future attacks.
