Abstract

With the need to monitor an ever growing number of networks with ever growing sizes, bandwidth requirements for monitoring data are skyrocketing. For modern solutions it is therefore desirable to lower netload by inserting into the monitoring infrastructure special nodes that flexibly aggregate exchanged information. The current Internet Engineering Drafts of the IPFIX Working Group specify a protocol for the exchange of network flow information which is based on Cisco Netflow V9, but IPFIX Concentrators, although mentioned at several places, remain unspecified. This study thesis therefore presents a concept to achieve aforementioned goals. A rule-based Concentrator aggregates multiple observed chunks of monitoring data, called Netflows, into a single Flow by applying flexible aggregation criteria that can be adapted for a wide range of tasks (charging, intrusion detection). To do so, the existing drafts of both the IPFIX Protocol and the IPFIX Information Model were extended by a new type of Template Set and two new abstract data types. Finally, a reference implementation of such a Netflow Concentrator in the form of a set of extensible modules bundled in a library was developed. Practical tests ensured their interoperability, collected and analyzed data about runtime- and memory performance of the implementation and evaluated the efficiency of various aggregation rules.
