For the configuration and administration (management) of multicast networks, an extensive knowledge about the complete structure of a network is required. Suitable models are necessary to support the description and behavior of multicast networks. This master thesis introduces a layered model for the network and its components. The layered model contains the following features: Representation of different types of network devices; Modeling of the Link Layer its attributes and its interaction with the medium; Modeling of the Network Layer and its routing capabilities; Modeling of the Application Layer and the services offered by this layer to a multicast application The model was developed using some features of the UML (Uniform Modeling Language) style. UML is a graphically oriented language that is gaining every day more relevance for software designers. UML allows a precise modeling of multicast networks and an easy mapping of the objects of the model to many object-oriented programming languages like Java and C++. An implementation of the model in Java was also developed to apply the model to real networks. The application allows the representation, simulation and analysis of multicast networks. Communication with other programs for importing of dynamical properties (like CPU load, packet loss or the status of a device) was also implemented. A very important design requirement for this Master Thesis is the extensibility of the model and the application for future modifications. The utilization of the UML and Java facilitate the development process of new 'multicast' objects and/or the upgrade of existing objects with their attributes and behaviors. This Master Thesis was an initiative of the Regional Computing Center in Erlangen (RRZE). The RRZE uses multicasting for some of its applications and requires this model and the software tool for improving the design and management of their multicast networks.
