Description

Current research on Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) is strongly focusing on safety applications as they are potentially the main driver to use DSRC radios in addition to other safety-enabling technologies like radar, ultrasonic sensors, and stereo cameras. It has already been shown that IVC in cities suffers from radio signal shadowing by other vehicles and buildings and, hence, standard compliant beaconing (one-hop message broadcast) is not suitable for all safety applications. We focus on intersection assistance applications, which are supposed to warn the driver if other approaching vehicles endanger the own vehicle. For this scenario, we already identified some of the most critical challenges.

A promising solution is cooperative communication where basically every vehicle can act as a possible relay for urgent information. Therefore, the goal of this project is to determine under what circumstances it makes sense to relay and to define which node is best suited for relaying which information. The intersection relaying application will not only be evaluated with usual network metrics, but also in terms of safety, i.e., how many crashes can be avoided and how the severity of the impact can be reduced in case of still resulting crashes. To investigate the effectiveness of such intersection safety applications we mainly rely on simulation models that have been carefully validated with real-world measurements.
